Spa-tacular!

Posted on 6th July 2017

We arrived at Spa, on the back of a great test and so felt confident of a strong result.

The confidence wasn’t misplaced with me setting a new am lap record in qualifying and gaining pole by nearly half a second.

Seb managed 4th for the second race and we were feeling confident for both races.

In the first race I lost out at turn one to the guesting factory Blancpain Ferrari but two laps in re took the position and then set about building a gap, sadly this was to be the most frustrating stint I have ever driven, which started with the first of 3 large crashes meaning that the whole first stint where we had an advantage was nullified due to me having to serve it circulating under safety car conditions.

So I eventually brought the car into the pits in first position but without the gap we needed due to the carried over success penalty we had to serve for winning Silverstone. This was very frustrating as I felt confident that I could have built enough of a gap given the opportunity, but as they say ‘That’s Racing’!

Seb then did his best to catch back up and we managed to  end up 4th in race one.

Race two started with Seb in 4th, and following a scrappy start we were down in 6th  and by the time Seb returned to the pits we were in 5th position, not ideal…however I knew that we were fast  and returned to the circuit with the bit between my teeth, we were catching fast only for me to have to pit and serve a stop go penalty due to Seb having several track limit excursions…hugely frustrating.

However we were still in with a fighting chance of a result and I continued to chase down the leaders, eventually I was on the tail of our team mates who were hassling the leading Lamborghini.

The pressure finally took effect and the Minshaw Lamborghini spun right in front of us,…Ian managed to just miss the spinning Lamborghini but with nowhere to go I glanced the side of the car damaging my front wing. I continued on, but knowing that I was compromised it was all about trying to bring the car home and try to score points which we managed finishing in 4th. This was disappointing as we were on for a potential win, but naturally we were very happy for our team mates who had their maiden win in British GT!

Onwards!!!
